The best way to find out is to visit your airline's Web site. Some airlines are charging for all checked bags. Here, for example, is United's post on the new rules.

The best bet is to check with your airline just before your trip to get the latest information. (Tip: Try entering "baggage" and your airline's name into Google.) If you are still not sure, try calling your airline.

It is common for airlines to have rules such as these for checked baggage (which most airlines are not waiving):

The maximum size of each checked bag is 62 inches (length + width + height)

The maximum weight per checked bag is 50 pounds each
